E-records jobs: Baruch College (deadline 21 October), Louisiana State University, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, DePaul University

I leave town for a week and the job market explodes -- which is a good thing! In the interest of keeping my posts to a manageable length, I'll post four job descriptions today and will put up the remainder tomorrow.

Baruch College, City University of New York is searching for a Digital Initiatives Librarian (application deadline 21 October 2013), Louisiana State University is looking for a University Archivist, the University of Hawai'i at Manoa seeks an Archivist,  DePaul University in Chicago is hiring a Digital Archivist. Details below the fold.
Do you hold a MLS/MLIS/MSIS degree and a second graduate degree? Are you comfortable leading digitization initiatives and planning for the preservation of born-digital materials? Does the thought of working in Manhattan appeal to you? If so, Baruch College, which is part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system, is searching for a Digital Initiatives Librarian:
The William and Anita Newman Library of Baruch College seeks applicants for appointment to a tenure-track faculty position as Assistant Professor - Digital Initiatives Librarian. The successful candidate will lead the creation, maintenance, and stewardship of digital collections, including the digitization of special collections and other library materials and the implementation and maintenance of discovery tools related to these initiatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for recommending policies and best practices to assure access to the digital collections. Additionally s/he will work with the collection curators to select collections to be digitized; manage the content creation process and acquisition of born digital collections; in conjunction with IT staff, assure adequate storage for the digital collections and implementation of back-up strategies; identify potential third party services and work with the organization and the department in implementing vendor services; create and update project documentation; promote and market the digital collections program; and assist in evaluation of the program. S/he will hire, train, and manage digital collections staff including digital technicians. The position reports to the Head of Archives and Special Collections, but requires close collaboration with the Metadata Librarian, IT staff, and other units of the College. As a member of the library faculty the successful candidate is expected to provide reference and research assistance to library users, teach, and engage in active scholarship that leads to publication.

The Newman Library is a recipient of the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award from the Association of College and Research Libraries, as well as the American Institute of Architects Honor Award for Excellence in Design, the Award of Excellence for Library Architecture, presented jointly by the American Library Association and the American Institute of Architects, and the Library Buildings Award, presented by the Library Administration and Management Section of the American Library Association. The Library has an active instruction program that includes credit courses leading to an undergraduate Minor in Information Studies.

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a Master's in Library Science (MLS), Master's in Library Information Studies (MLIS), or closely related discipline. A second graduate degree in addition to the MLS/MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school is required for a position as Assistant Professor. This position requires at least two years of experience with current digital library technologies and experience with managing digital projects.
As noted above, the application deadline is 21 October 2013. The starting salary range for this position is $61,903 - $81,645 and is "commensurate with qualifications and experience; fringe benefits are also on offer. Do you like the thought of living and working in Baton Rouge? If so, you may be Louisiana State University's next University Archivist:
Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the University Archivist has primary responsibility for the appraisal, acquisition, processing, and preservation of university records of enduring historical, evidential, or administrative value, and leads records management efforts for university records in all formats, including born-digital materials. The incumbent arranges and describes archival collections and creates DACS-compliant finding aids. He/she hires, supervises, trains, and assigns work to 2 FTE support staff in University Archives. The University Archivist provides reference assistance to patrons, participates in outreach activities as appropriate, and works to meet tenure and promotion requirements.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree from an ALA-accredited library school program with a concentration in archival studies or management; three years professional experience in the appraisal, processing, and description of archival materials. Knowledge of issues pertaining to management of institutional records; demonstrated knowledge of archival theory, practice, and national and international standards and best practices, including Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS), EAD, MARC , LCSH, LNAF. Demonstrated strength in interpersonal skills to collaborate successfully with a broad range of personnel from various campus departments; strong oral and written communication and organizational skills; evidence of potential to meet the promotion and tenure requirements for scholarship/research and professional service.

Special Requirements
Ability to lift and move 40 pounds.

Desired qualifications
Demonstrated project management and supervisory skills. Experience with university or institutional records; knowledge of or experience with electronic records management and digital preservation issues; experience providing reference service in an archival setting; knowledge of archive management software and EAD.

The University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM) seeks an innovative and dynamic individual to join the Archives & Manuscripts Department.

Library faculty are expected to be professionally active, progress successfully along the promotion and tenure track, and participate fully as members of the Library Faculty.

Under the general direction of the Head of the Archives & Manuscripts Department, the Archivist will work in a team environment that incorporates innovation and new technologies to manage collections and serve the user.

The archivist will appraise, arrange and describe archival and manuscript collections; manage the Library’s archival management open-source software; deliver reference and research opportunities; and collaborate in planning, evaluating and implementing digital preservation polices based on best practices.

Duties
  • Hawai’i Congressional Papers Collection primarily; other collections as assigned:
  • Oversee all aspects of the Hawai’i Congressional Papers collection (http://libweb.hawaii.edu/libdept/archives/congressional/index.htm).
  • Select, acquire, appraise, arrange describe and preserve congressional and other collections, according to national standards.
  • Establish and maintain strong donor relations, including with Hawai’i’s members of Congress, their staffs and representatives, in Washington, D.C and Honolulu.
  • Establish and maintain strong connections with other congressional papers archivists and organizations, including attending and participating in conferences.
  • Provide effective outreach to instructional faculty that will encourage them to incorporate archival, primary-source research materials in their curricula.
  • Provide specialized information services, including reference and research consultation, to students, faculty and members of the community via e-mail, person-to-person, online chat or other modalities.

Librarian III Minimum Qualifications

  • Three years of appropriate professional experience at a college, university or research organization, or equivalent AND
  • Twenty-four credits of post-baccalaureate course work beyond the required Minimum Qualification master’s degree, preferably in a humanities or social science field.
Librarian IV Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum Qualifications for Librarian II.
  • Seven years of appropriate professional experience at a college, university or research organization, or equivalent AND
  • A second Master’s Degree, preferably in a humanities or social sciences field.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Professional archival experience in a manuscript repository or archives located at an academic or research library.
  • Certified Archivist (CA) status from the Academy of Certified Archivists.
  • Proficiency in the use and configuration of archival collection management systems (such as Archivists' Toolkit, Archon or ArchivesSpace).
  • Proficiency with content standards (e.g., DACS, RAD), encoding standards (e.g., EAD), authority control, and other data content and structure standards relevant to archival control.
  • Working knowledge of standards related to electronic records, digital imaging, digital objects, and metadata as well as knowledge of a variety of digital content formats and standards.
  • Demonstrated experience in providing outreach activities to students, faculty, or community groups.

Finally, if you're a modestly experienced electronic records archivist who has some technical chops and likes the idea of living and working in Chicagoland, DePaul University is looking for a Digital Archivist
The Digital Archivist will report to the Head of Special Collections and Archives. The Digital Archivist will work collaboratively across the library and the University to expand the library's capacity to responsibly acquire born-digital archival content, manage existing digital holdings, and ensure the effective acquisition, appraisal, description, preservation, future migration, access to and security of digital archives. In addition, the Digital Archivist will engage library and campus partners and provide guidance on best practices for data management, training and development. The Digital Archivist may serve as a liaison librarian in assigned areas.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead efforts to acquire, preserve, describe, and provide access to born-digital archival and special collections materials. 
  • Develop processes for ingesting born-digital materials governed by the University Records Retention Schedule as well as those digital materials included in personal and organizational collections. 
  •  Develop and document techniques and procedures for acquiring born-digital content directly from the creators. 
  • Evaluate proposed acquisitions with born-digital components in collaboration with the University Archivist and other departmental staff. 
  • Coordinate acquisitions of born-digital content, act as a liaison between the creators and the library's archival and technical staff. 
  • Develop and document work-flow across library and campus units necessary to support the preservation and access of digital materials over time. 
  • Build the infrastructure for the acquisition and preservation of born-digital collections and electronic records, work to identify and implement new applications and tools and continuously align local policies and procedures with national and international standards for data ingest, description, and long-term preservation. 
  • Assist with the research and implementation of information architecture, coding standards, and emerging technologies as well as participate in the development of controlled vocabulary, metadata structures, and metadata crosswalks. 
  • Coordinate the procedural integration of (or develop exporting processes from) the archival content management system. 
  • Engage library and campus partners and develop policies and technical standards for digital content creators. 
  • Advise on emerging standards and best practices for born-digital content. 
  • Serve as an expert in digital curation, recommend appropriate tools and procedures to capture, preserve, and make digital content available. 
  • Deliver born-digital content to external discovery and delivery mechanisms in collaboration with specialists in metadata, information technology, and scholarly communications, ensure that born-digital library resources are as widely accessible to the DePaul community and general public as possible. 
  • Serve as liaison librarian to one or more academic or co-curricular programs, as assigned, including responsibilities for provision of information and instructional services, collection management, and engagement with faculty, staff, and students promoting library resources and services. 
  • Maintain an awareness of best practices in academic librarianship through reading in the scholarly and professional literature, participation in relevant conferences, workshops, and professional development programs, and apply lessons learned to current needs in the University Libraries. 
  • Participate and represent the University Libraries in University, state, regional, or national professional service activities. 
  • Direct activities of one or more student assistants. 
  •  Perform other duties as assigned. 
Minimum Requirements 
  • Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent. 
  • 2 years of professional library experience, with at least one of those years working in an archival repository or similar setting. 
  • Experience with born-digital archiving. 
  • Knowledge of information technology resources, print information resources, and Web-based information resources required to provide excellent library services. 
  • Knowledge of integrated library systems, e-resource management systems, and library discovery systems. 
  • Knowledge of specifications for digital repository systems and related technologies, including auditing/checksum software, write blockers, file format identification, file migration, and media conversion. 
  • Knowledge of MS Office and other routine information technology applications employed at the library or University level, and enterprise-level systems employed for the management of library collections or the provision of library services. 
  • Familiarity with data structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital materials (e.g., EAD, Dublin Core, METS, MODS, PREMIS, XML/XSL). 
  •  Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. 
  • Excellent planning, project management, and problem-solving skills. 
  • Strong command of archival theory and best practices, especially as they relate to the particular issues posed by born digital content and electronic records. 
  • Visual acuity, hand-eye coordination and motor skills sufficient to use a computer, copy machine and other office equipment. 
  • Ability to spend extended periods of time standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, and bending. 
  • Ability to routinely lift up to 25 pounds. 
  • Ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical staff. 
  • Ability to develop and document procedures and work-flow. 
  • Ability to work with diverse constituencies. 
  • Ability to work in a collegial environment in order to provide excellent library services. 
  • Ability to interpret bibliographic data accurately. 
  • Ability to work evening and weekend hours and travel among DePaul campuses, as required. 
 Preferred Requirements
  • Familiarity with records management practices. 
  • Familiarity and experience with disk imaging and e-mail and web-site archiving tools and techniques. Knowledge of scripting languages; such as: Ruby or Python.
