Archivists have the tools they need to combat most thieves; the willingness, on the other hand, seems to be sorely lacking, despite situations like this.

I'm continually disappointed in the many organizations with substantial resources that are seemingly incapable of broadly addressing and sharing information between repositories and facilitating growth in the field of holdings protection and recovery. We get in our own way. I'm starting to think that the psychological impact of theft and the inability to move beyond that immediate visceral reaction experienced in the aftermath of a theft, even if an organization believes it has sufficiently healed, are the culprit of this almost complete inertia and virtual sabotage.

I also registered for a givebackmail account and linked up my gmail to it. However I realized all my emails in gmail were showing as read after being delivered to givebackmail. I wanted to delete my account in givebackmail as a result. The strange thing is I didn't find an option to do it. I asked everywhere, still no response. Can you see if you can delete your account. I wanted to get my gmaill emails on my phone as unread, so I just changed my password to gmail thinking that givebackemail wouldn't be able to retrieve my emails anymore. It has worked!!

Improved processing of email is a worthy goal, but unrealistic given the fact that there is no open source software that can be integrated to do it. The only two decent tools I have found to do this are Aid4Mail and EmailChemy. Both are fine tools, but they are paid.

Migrating email is incredibly complex, and I think the only realistic option for something like Archivematica is to expect people to submit one of the mbox flavors.

Another thing to note about Archivematica is that it is under the GPL license. There are very good reasons why Artefactual chose that license, but it is somewhat constraining in terms of the other open source libraries and tools than can be included in the distribution package.

To quote from the GPL FAQ (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#GPLAndPlugins): "If the program dynamically links plug-ins, and they make function calls to each other and share data structures, we believe they form a single program, which must be treated as an extension of both the main program and the plug-ins. This means the plug-ins must be released under the GPL or a GPL-compatible free software license, and that the terms of the GPL must be followed when those plug-ins are distributed.
